Now Kaibab Lake, next: the North Rim
We’ve spent a few days in a pleasant USFS camp near Williams, AZ – – Kaibab Lake Campground. It’s not scenic, and the lake is nearly dried up in the drought. There are no hookups (we are dry-camping), but it’s paved, flat, quiet, and a great place to gather with some friends and family (4 RV’s at one point) and just kick back, catch up, and relax. Williams is right across the highway, and Camping World is 20 miles east. It’s nearly civilization!
Look carefully (left to right) and you’ll see the RV’s of Karin and Greg (Howie), Glen and Katie, Siegy and Linda, and Mike and Georgina. Campsites are nicely spaced and the whole place is really comfy.
Earlier today we drove east on I-40 to visit Meteor Crater and Winslow (see earlier posts). Tomorrow, we’re casting off for a favorite spot, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It’s a lot more wild than the South Rim, and we plan to stay there through Memorial Day weekend if all goes well.
Kaibab Lake is home to some very odd-looking tree squirrels. They are frisky, and a bit suspicious of people who have cameras instead of food, so I was unable to get any decent photos. Here’s the best one: he does have a bushy tail like a grey squirrel, but it’s hidden behind that post. On first glance, their ears look a lot like rabbits – – but they are simply adorned with brushy tufts of long hairs. None of us had ever seen the like.
