Almost Done
We arrived home last night after a one-day 430 mile drive. That’s on the long side for us. We were going to make it a two-day trip, but we realized that there was just no place we wanted to stay for the night along I-5, and making a side trip on the last day of our 4-month journey just didn’t feel right.
It wasn’t all that bad, even the Friday-night commute traffic was relatively light (in our direction). The traffic on I-80 eastbound was horrific, five lanes of solid creeping metal for tens of miles. We were westbound and thankful for it.
Our house is as we left it (thanks to our wonderful house-care-takers), and it feels familiar and strange at the same time. We sleep on opposite sides of our home bed, and twice last night I tried to get out on the wrong side.
The next couple of days will be spent emptying and cleaning out Howie and Ralph. The next couple of months will be spent making repairs, upgrades, and just generally getting ready to take them out on our next excursion.
This Canada-Alaska trip is strong in our memories, but it sometimes seems like a vivid dream instead of a string of real experiences. We’re both grateful for the time that I’ve spent writing up all the blog posts, because we both enjoy reminiscing while looking through the photos and the texts.
I will likely publish a few additional posts, details I haven’t covered or thoughts I haven’t voiced. I will just see what strikes me.
Thanks for reading,
G.

I’ve followed you two through the wilds of Canada and Alaska, what an adventure you’ve had! I actually tented two weeks with my son, doing the trip from the Anchorage airport to Denali, Fairbanks, Kok. Our side trips were Circle Hot Springs, up the haul road to the closed gates of the refinery above the Arctic Circle, and to Valdez, and out to Homer. But as well our favorite was the airplane trip landing on the side of Danali. From Talkeetna airport the pilot took us in a two seater with a seat rigged up in back of the front two seats, landed on the ice field, let us get out and walk around and hearing the ice crack and seeing it fall is something I will never forget. And we were the only people there, but it was 20 some years ago! We put over 5,000 miles on the rental car!
Milli,
We sure did have a great time. More crowded than yours but still fun.
Thanks for reading,
G.
Excellent job!
You would have fit right in with Lewis and Clarke!
Robert
Welcome home. I vicariously enjoyed your trip. The observations and pictures were great. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
Thank you so much for sharing your trip. Where are we going next? 🙂
We’ll be headed out to the Southwest around Christmas, hope to be out-and-about for a month or two. Meanwhile, I’ll have some follow-up stuff on the Alaska trip that I’ve been thinking about. Thanks for reading…
G.
I’m really gonna miss you! Always looked forward to your next post. Thanks for letting me travel along!
Aww, thanks Rovergirl. But don’t be sad, we’ll be taking off again around Christmas time, and I always post while we’re traveling. Also, I hope to put out some miscellany stuff in the interim. Things we learned on the road, RV upgrades or repairs, things like that.
stay tuned,
G.
We have thoroughly enjoyed your writings and photos of your journey. We followed along in my Milepost and map getting familiar with your surroundings like we were there ! You really did a great job chronicling your adventure.
Thank you,
George and Ann Marie
Thanks George,
I write the posts as a personal journal, and it’s fun for us to review the places and activities later on. But I also enjoy bringing the variety and excitement to everyone else who “travels along with us”. Thanks for reading,
G.
Glad you guys made it home safely, we just got home from our 1st trip after retiring. Did a around Florida trip to see how we would do. It was great. We are already planning to go to Alaska next summer. That is why I have been following you all. I hope we have near the fun it sounds like you had. Safe travels to you.
Welcome home! Thank you so much for the great stories and beautiful pictures! Having traveled to many of the spots you visited in Canada via my car, tent, ice chest and map, I am looking forward to a re-do in my Itasca Sunstar. Your adventures have motivated me to place this trip higher on the to do list. I’m sure it will be a bit different spending the night under the stars inside my rig as opposed to the inside of a tent. I hope you will be posting on the repairs and maintenance issues you’ve come across as a result of this trip. Some of your posts looked pretty exciting.
Have fun and watch that rolling out of bed.
You’re going to have some serious fun Marilyn. The RV-vs-tent traveling style is something that Karin and I discussed many times as we relaxed inside our RV and watched shivering tenters go about their business.
I do intend to do some follow-up posting on repairs, upgrades, etc. As for rolling out of bed, well at least our floor is carpeted at home.
