Launched (barely) to Alaska
It’s Saturday night, and we are carousing our way through the evening by sitting inside Howie, reading, and working on an annoying Internet problem. Big night out.
We drove up to Redding today, an easy 3/4 day drive, and we are parked at Camping World for a free night’s stay. Tomorrow, another easy drive up to Grant’s Pass and be ready for some service and upgrades on Howie.
This is the first day of a planned (but un-planned) four-month trip driving Howie (our motorhome) and Ralph (our Ranger 4×4 pickup) to Alaska and back. We have only a general idea of the highways we will travel, a small “hit list” of places to see, and absolutely no reservations or tickets for activities or lodgings. We hate having to meet schedules, so we are, classically, “winging it”. If we end up too many times stranded with no place to stay, we might have to change our thoughts – but for now, we are foot-loose and fancy-free.
Our <very rough> itinerary is to spend less than a month going up through Canada, then maybe six weeks in Alaska, then another month coming back down south. In September, we’ll meet some Swiss friends who are visiting the US and maybe spend some time in or near the Tetons in Wyoming.
Whenever I can get some time, motivation, and Internet, I’ll post our whereabouts and activities in this blog.
Should be fun, huh?
Mile: 252 Day: 1
Safe travels Greg & Karin!
Hi Greg, Ensure you pick up a copy of The Milepost BEFORE you get to Alaska. It is an excellent guide and such informative reading, and we had it open on our lap every day. Hated to part with it, when we returned to the Yukon. We spent a month in Alaska, and loved every inch of it!
Go way beyond the Arctic Circle, (in Ralph!) cos the road is pretty good all the way to the top. Wiggle your toes in the Arctic Ocean.
Have fun
Yes indeed – – we have been reading the Milepost for several months now, an amazing resource.
We’re hoping to take Howie to Inuvik (Dempster highway) – – but not sure about Prudhoe Bay. Stay tuned….
Safe and fun travels! Look forward to your posts!
Fantastic! I can’t wait to hear about it. Love to you both and safe travels!!
