Standin’ on the Corner
Winslow, AZ might have dwindled into the invisible dusty halls of time had it not been for the Eagles song. We drifted over there today, not hitch-hiking but in the air-conditioned comfort afforded by our trusty Ralph. Along I-40, accompanied by an obnoxious stiff 25mph cross-winds, I stood on the famous corner and waited for the girl in the flat-bed Ford to come by, slow down, and check me out. Fortunately, her painting is on the wall at Standin’-on-the-corner Park.

Note also that “Take it Easy” was actually written by Jackson Browne, another incredible artist who is still making big sounds in music.
The town is spang on old Route 66, and there is as much commercialization of that coincidence as there is the mention in the Eagles’ song.
Winslow is a bit east of the comparably-famous Meteor Crater, and we spent more time (and wonder) there.
Dick and I had the pleasure of seeing Winslow, Arizona several years ago. We stayed at the beautiful hotel right next to the railroad tracks. It was fun watching all of the trains go through, however, sleeping next to the tracks did have it’s drawbacks. It sounded as if the train was running right through our room. Have fun.
